Alright, so this is a post that I was not really sure I was going to write. I was contacted by Luv Ur Body and they make menstrual cups, and I will be honest at first I thought oh my how cool is this! I don’t have to buy tampons, or pads anymore, and this is going to be the answer to the trash the monthly period generates, awesome! Well, not so much. 
This is a whole new ballgame ladies, this is not like using anything you have used before and to be honest, it is quite a learning curve. It honestly took me 3 cycles to get things straightened out with it and in the end I am so glad that I did.
You see, so many of you are young, and have just had children or are thinking about having children and are probably pretty agile and flexible, let me tell you something, that is not me! I am old, going to be 47 this year and I had my last baby 24 years ago, I am not so agile and I’m so far from flexible that i think I am actually the opposite of it now.
I remember when I started my period I was 9 yrs old, and my mom was on a trip and I was left with Dad to go with me to the store to buy my first supplies, we got the largest, longest, thickest, and most uncomfortable options available, Dad of course bought three boxes, we did not want to go back. I never want to go back to those days, I can tell you for sure! It was awful then to use those things.
Now, the Luv Ur Body menstrual cup, which as I understand it, menstrual cups have been around for many years, was very new to me. It did not make sense at first in my brain, wasn’t the object to absorb, and protect and move that stuff out of me, out of the house into the trash and be done?! The object is really not that, the object is to be able to control your flow in a way that is healthy for you and healthy for the environment at the same time.
So, here we go, first month, did not like the feel of it, not to mention it took me into positions I did not think were even possible by me anymore to get the thing inserted, I tried a few times, and then no, went back to my old stand by for that cycle. The second cycle, I wrote the Luv Ur Body customer service and told them I think that I am shaped differently than any other woman ever, it was not working it was not in right, it was just ugh! They wrote me back assured me that I was not so different, sent me to a couple of videos and I tried again. I actually got it right once, and it was great, 12 hours and I had no worries, when I removed it I was shocked that it was not a mess and well frankly overflowing! That was the last time that cycle that I got it right. sigh!
Maybe there should not be such a learning curve? I was sure at this point that it was just not going to work for me, I wrote Luv Ur Body again, and let them know I could not review this product, I just could not get a handle on using it. Again, customer care (which is awesome) contacted me and I watched a few more videos. The next cycle I was ready.
Here is where it all made sense, I found a different fold to use it. You can find all kinds of folds here. Golden! It was comfortable, actually could not feel it at all, I did not have cramping with it, I felt oddly free! I was on my period, and I did not care, it was easy, I checked it after 8 hours and there was hardly any fluid in it, which shocked me, I reinserted it, and again, golden, the fit was great. I love this thing now! I want the whole world to hear about these. It was a really good feeling to not have to worry about having a bunch of stuff in the diaper bag for me, as I did not have to carry tampons or pads around anymore.
For me, it was the third cycle before I finally got the hang of this and honestly I don’t think I will go back, as you see for women my age, we sometimes have two periods a month, and then go a couple of months without it, and then get a very heavy period, this is going to be great to use to not have to worry about having all different absorbancy of things on hand.
Do I think this is the best option for ALL women? Nope. I do believe though that this is a great option for most women and that if you have a little patience you will be happy with this option.
I guess it is true you can teach old(er) women new tricks!
