Have you ever attempted to get a child between the ages of 8 and 12 involved in a discussion about God when they have not attended church regularly, have not had any ‘formal’ religious upbringing or attended Sunday School or bible studies for that matter? Yeah, it’s a little like asking the teenagers to clean their room.
Blank stare. Blink. Blank stare again.
I grew up being “forced” to go to Sunday School every Sunday. At the time, I wasn’t all that thrilled about it. There were times when I wished I could have just stayed in bed and begged off going, but the only time we got a “get out of Sunday School pass” was when we were sick. If you weren’t sick, you were at Sunday School and then afterwards, attending church services. Mom would swing by after the service was over and pick us up and take us back home. I guess that was time for her and dad to have us kids out of the house and some free time for the two of them.
So when I had children of my own, I didn’t force them to go to church. I gave them the option to decide for themselves. There are bibles in our home, they have seen me reading my bible, I’ve given each of them a bible of their own at one point in time or another. We have had discussions about God and the after life and how to get to heaven and all sorts of topics. I’ve never thought of giving them a means of discovering themselves through a devotional designed just for them though. Genius!
One of the things I love about this devotional and journal set written by Amy Parker is that it is quite literally almost perfect for your 8 to 14-year-old child.
About the Devotional:
The devotional is an illustrated 90-day devotional teaching and inspiring kids to dream about their future, to focus on faith, love, and joy, and recognize that God has a plan and purpose for each and every one of us. It contains 160 pages.
The Plans I Have For You Journal prompts your child’s creative thinking and exploration of their unique talents and their one-of-a-kind personality and then in turn helps them to explore how God uses our unique traits to spread joy and love and make the world a better place.
After all, isn’t that something that we all want – universally as parents – for our children? To live in a better world, a more loving world?
Amy Parker has sold more than thirty books for children, teens, and adults. She has also collaborated with authors ranging from New York Times bestsellers to her very own son. Two of these collaborations are recipients of Christian retailing’s Best Awards, and she has also won three Mom’s Choice Awards. But Amy’s greatest reward is being a wife to Daniel and a mom to their amazing sons, Michael and Ethan.

January 29, 2016 at 3:22 pmMy favorite bible verse: 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
