As dogs are different from us, there are things that we eat that they can digest properly, and others that could make them seriously ill. Below is a guide to what you can feed your dog, and what you should avoid.
Carrots: Yes
Dogs can eat carrots and they make a healthy snack for your pooch. Not only this, but they are low in calories so if you’re looking for a tasty, healthy treat, carrots can do the job. This also saves money on expensive dog treats. If you are going to give your dog a carrot to snack on, make sure to cut it into smaller chunks that are manageable for your dog. This will avoid choking hazards.
Chocolate: Never
It is widely known that dogs shouldn’t eat chocolate, yet many dog owners still sneak a little bit of chocolate to their pooch now and again. This should never be done, as dogs cannot metabolize two ingredients in chocolate: caffeine and theobromine. Dark chocolate is the most harmful.
If your dog does consume any chocolate, it may start to vomit or get diarrhea. This can lead to dehydration, seizures, and in the worst cases, death. However much they want that chocolate bar you’re eating, it’s not worth the risk. You can find dog-safe chocolate, made especially for dogs.
Fish: Yes
Many dog owners aren’t aware that white fish is a healthy and recommended source of nutrition in their dog’s diet. Just like for humans, fish can provide dogs with essential proteins and omega-3 fatty acids. Some dogs can be allergic to fish, so if they don’t seem to respond well to seafood, don’t attempt to feed them any more fish.
Not all fish is suitable for dog consumption. For more information, check out Native Pet’s blog on can dogs eat fish. Here they let you know how to feed your dog fish safely, why you must debone, and what type of fish is best for your dog.
Bread: Yes
Most dogs can safely eat wholegrain and plain white bread. Avoid any bread with nuts or seeds in it, as some may not be suitable for your dog and could make them ill. While bread is a tasty snack for your dog, it should be a treat, as too much could cause weight gain.
Avocados: No
Avocados are another big no when it comes to food your dog can eat. Avocados should never be consumed by dogs, as they contain persin. This is a toxin that is poisonous to all types of dogs. Persin can be found in every part of the avocado, meaning no part is safe for your dog. If they do consume avocado, take them to the vets immediately. Signs of poisoning include breathing difficulties and sudden weakness.
Peanut Butter: Yes
Many dog owners give peanut butter to their dogs as an occasional treat. This is perfectly safe when given in small quantities and your dog will love it. Peanut butter is a healthy snack, as long as it is limited. Too much can cause weight gain. When you do give your dog peanut butter, choose the unsalted kind, as too much salt may be harmful.
Eggs: Yes
Eggs are another easy and nutritious snack for your dog. If you are making boiled eggs in the morning for you and the family, add an extra one for your pooch. Not only will he love it but it contains plenty of protein, vitamins, and minerals. Cooked eggs are a good choice if your dog is sick and is refusing to eat.
One medium egg is enough for your dog in a serving. Make sure it is properly cooked. Never feed your dog a raw egg, as this could lead to a spread of harmful bacteria known as Salmonella. This may not make your dog sick, but it can be passed to humans and will make you sick if you catch it.
Salt: Sometimes
Too much salt in anyone’s diet is not good for the heart. It can be hard to tell how much salt your dog is eating, which is why you should get them organic, healthy dog foods. If you do feed them anything extra, make sure to limit any salty snacks, such as chips. Too much salt can be fatal, and the main symptoms of salt poisoning are vomiting and seizures. If they do eat something salty, make sure they have plenty of water to avoid dehydration. If you are worried, take them to the vet straight away.
If you are a dog owner, or a soon-to-be dog owner, understanding what they can and can’t eat is essential to keeping them safe and healthy. This is not an extensive list, so make sure to check what is safe for your dog before giving them anything new.
