Isn’t it interesting that recently a study was released that basically stated the saturated fats aren’t bad for your heart. The study indicates that it was a myth and the real culprit is refined foods, and it may take a decade or more to get this myth out of the collective mindset. I think that is interesting. I use butter in my house, the real stuff, not margarine. I also use real cheese, real sour cream, whole milk, and a lot of (GASP) eggs!
I think that we have gotten away from real foods on so many levels in our modernized, convenience dependent society and it makes no sense to me. If we all could eat the regular good foods that are not beaten up by manufacturers we would probably all be better off.
I don’t know about you but most things that I find that are low fat, or light or any of the other synonyms used today to indicate that it is better for you, seems to be incredibly processed and full of sugar. If you don’t have fats, you have to have something that tastes good, so they add sugars of all kinds including HFCS.
It confuses me how people think this is good for you. Out on the farm do you think that they get the milk, strain the fat off of it, then add some sugar or corn syrup, and then decide to eat it? NOPE! I can bet my house on the fact that they eat it right the way it is. Not lower in fat, not messed with but just the way it is. When they make butter, they do not add oils, salts, thickeners, or any of that nasty stuff; they make real old-fashioned butter from the real old-fashioned milk they get from the cows that are eating real grass. What a concept.
I used to stay up on healthy food trends and what is good now and what is bad now, you know all of the don’t eat bacon with coffee, don’t cook anything with fats in the microwave, don’t eat saturated fats, don’t eat sugar, and all of the other “advice” we are given by the media. It was hard to keep up with it all let alone try to follow it.
I truly believe that when we get back to real foods, we will start seeing the health come back, that has been lacking in the recent years. There are trends of diseases we never thought we would see, yet with modifying foods and making things light, less fatty, less this and less that, we are probably creating our own problems. A health crisis really.
I am not foolish enough to believe that, we should all load up on saturated fats with abandon or to assign saturated fats a minimum daily value, but I think we need to stop being so afraid of eating real foods, even if they have fats in them. We need to remember that we can have any food we want if it’s a whole food and we are eating it in moderation.
When we get back to whole foods that are unadulterated, I believe we are going to find the answers to some hard questions. Back to nature, if you will.
What do you think? Do you believe all the hype of the week or do you try to do it all in moderation?

April 22, 2014 at 6:16 pmI’ve had high cholesterol for at least ten years. My husband and I recently switched to a high protein, high vegetables (except the starchy veggies) diet. I now eat *gasp* bacon and whole eggs every morning, and two weeks ago my doctor told me my cholesterol couldn’t be more perfect. Lol, I guess eating “real” foods as opposed to highly processed stuff really is good for us. 😉

April 1, 2014 at 1:56 amI think that you are right, but now that the government is genetically modifying our foods it’s back to the confusion again. I went to lunch with my co-workers at an Italian restaurant today. In the drive over, I mentioned that I am not eating gluten and one person said that they now use GMO corn to make gluten-free noodles. I had intended on eating an entree salad anyway, but if you don’t read about these topics you can make quite a few mistakes. Another reason to pray before you eat.

March 31, 2014 at 4:40 pmI think eating however you feel you should eat is probably just as healthy as following the “experts.” If you look up anything they have said is healthy or unhealthy, they reverse it within ten years! Like you, I personally believe a more natural diet is healthier.
