It’s hard to teach small children that mom and dad don’t have an endless supply of money to buy whatever they want whenever they want. We try to talk about having a budget and needs versus wants. Our 5 year old is starting to understand. We give him a small allowance for doing chores and he has starting saving his money to get things he wants (like a new movie or toy).

I think advertising geared at young kids and the attitudes of other adults are the two biggest problems parents are faced with when teaching their children how to handle money.
