When I saw that this month’s them for the sewing blog tour was transitions and changes I knew I had to write about my turn around from sewing with knits to wovens.
A lot of people start with woven fabrics and then move to knits as they gather skills and courage to sew more with stretch fabrics. I was the opposite and started with knits because that is what I like to wear and now I have moved to projects that take more woven fabrics.
I am even working on a quilt for one of my cousins who is having a new baby! I made the Riverwalk Dress from Seamingly Smitten with a lovely Rayon Challis for my first dress made from woven and I have to tell you I think knits are easier.
The Rayon Challis was difficult to work with, but it could just be my lack of experience, as the fabric feels awesome! It is soft and breathable and very cool for hot weather!
I took the chance and made my grandson some really great shorts as well with the Day Camp shorts pattern from Peek A Boo Pattern Shop. This was a great way to start into woven fabrics, as it is fast and easy. The pattern for the shorts is also free.
Quilting on the other hand has been an interesting journey indeed. It has been fun to find different fabrics and to research a bit on how to best do things.
Here are the fabrics I am using for the quilt!
I did not follow a pattern as I am doing a simple strip quilt, and it was pretty easy to put together, but you have to use cotton thread, and different needles for your machine, not to mention you are constantly sewing a straight line. Straight lines are not my strong suit at all! I have learned a ton and will be making another crib quilt for a new little boy here soon.
I hope to get the pattern, fabrics and tutorial up on the blog soon. Its taking me quite a while to figure out what I want to do.
One thing I do love about sewing with woven fabrics is the ability to get a great crease when I press my seams. Sometimes with knits you are lucky to get a guideline to go with and with woven you actually have a nice crease you can even measure from.
So what is your favorite thing to make with woven fabric? Are you a quilter? I would love to hear your adventures!
