5 Autumn Vacations In Virginia For The Entire Family

Virginia is one of the best states for taking vacations with the family. You have many options year round for everyone to enjoy. Whether you want attractions for the kids, historic sites or scenic views, you can create new memories in many different cities. As a southern Mom, there are many reasons to love vacations in Virginia.Especially if you know how to make the most of a road trip, you can have a memorable time with the kids and your spouse. To plan your next getaway this fall, here are popular Virginia vacations that have something to offer for everyone.

 

Visit Williamsburg, VA

 

This previous colonial settlement is a history-rich vacations for kids and adults. You can visit the restored building from the 1800’s-1900’s. One of the most famous buildings includes the Governor’s Palace. Built by the British authorities before the American revolution, the palace displays the wealth and opulence of royalty. If you would like your family to have some exposure to the colonial times, Williamsburg is home to the palace as well as many historical sites to visit. Moreover, Williamsburg has nearby amusement and water parks that can add fun entertainment days on the trip.

 

Drive Shenandoah National Park

 

The Shenandoah National Park has one of the most breathtaking drives in Virginia. Over 105 miles, the skyline drive has views that look out to the east or west. In the east, you can see the rolling piedmont. In the opposite direction, there are beautiful valley views. It takes about 3 hours to travel the entire skyline drive. However, you need to be very careful while driving on this route. In addition to paying attention to the road, the speed limit is just 35 mph. Next, you can visit Thomas Jefferson’s city, Charlottesville, Virginia. This historic city is home to the original quarters of Thomas Jefferson himself at Monticello. The house is located close to the Charlottesville downtown area. They offer plenty of tours that explain the history and stories of the grounds. If you would like to follow your own path, you can explore exhibits and walk around the trails. On top of that, you can visit the nationally renowned University of Virginia for any teenagers in the family who might be considering college. In a town like Charlottesville, you can see historic houses, a vibrant downtown and a forward thinking university.

 

Travel The Crooked Road

 

The Crooked Road is a route that spans over 300 miles through Virginia. Since this is a long distance trip, you may have to plan several stops as you make your way. Traveling down U.S. Route 58, you will see views from the Appalachian Mountains to the Coalfields. Along the way,there are many historical music venues to stop at. Some of the most significant locations are The Blue Ridge Music Center, the Bristol and Heartwood in Abingdon. With all the connected music destinations, the road is known as Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail. If you family loves country music, this trip could be perfect for everyone.

 

Experience Fredericksburg, VA

 

In the fall months, Fredericksburg has beautiful fall scenery. If your family loves the outdoors, it can be a nice trip for experiencing the autumn colors. As long as you go during the peak season, Fredericksburg is a site to see. In fact, this location is one the best places in the region to enjoy the fall colors. In addition, you can immerse yourself in parts of history. There are famous civil war battlegrounds and preserved structures to visit. For the vides, you can visit local farms and trails. This is one of the best natural vacations to take in Virginia.

 

There are so many enjoyable ways to vacation in Virginia. Depending on the interests of your family, choose a vacation this fall that has the perfect mix of history, scenery and entertainment. In Williamsburg, you have the governor’s palace as well as amusement attractions. If you want to enjoy the views, take the skyline drive route through the autumn leaves. Or, explore the different aspects of Charlottesville from Monticello to downtown. For music loving families, take a trip on the crooked road and see where country music all began. Additionally, Fredericksburg is another great autumn destination that has historic battlegrounds and local farms.
