Tips for new parents to avoid back pain

As a new parent, you will be holding your infant for many hours throughout the day and night. It is
common for women during pregnancy to suffer from back pain due to the extra weight, however,
once the baby is born, they often still have to carry a lot of weight. You will also be bending down a
lot to pick up your baby or play with your children.
Repeated strain on your back can cause a lot of issues in later life if you don’t look after it properly.
One example is hernias which can be difficult to correct and have been the result of many lawsuits,
such as the hernia mesh lawsuit Illinois.

Lift wisely
You should always lift your baby with care. Bend your knees, keep your feet hip-width apart and lift
use the stretch in your legs rather than your back. When carrying your baby keep them close to your
body.
When you are putting your little one back down, try and get a crib where the sides can be lowered –
this will allow you to place them without having to arch your back.

Feeding
Always have a seat that properly supports your back. You can also get special pillows to help support
you. Try and sit up tall and consider laying the baby on a pillow to lift them to the right height so you
don’t have to support their weight.

Carrying
Consider hands-free straps that keep your baby close to your body. Make sure there is plenty of
support on the shoulders and that there are straps around your hips to spread the night.
Try to avoid carrying your baby on your hip as this will put your spine out of alignment.

Exercise
After becoming a new parent, it is important to fit exercise into your daily routine. Exercises that
target your abs and back muscles will strengthen your back. Yoga or Pilates are both good options.
This could also be a good reason to escape parenthood once a week and have some you time.
Exercising will improve your day-to-day posture.

Shoes

Good shoes are essential for supporting your back. Make sure that your shoes fit you well and have
plenty of support. The base of the shoe should be thick to properly support the base of your foot
and your ankles.

Sleep
When you go to sleep your back gets a much-needed rest. Try and avoid uncomfortable positions or
having the baby in the bed. A firm mattress is best. You can also get cushions designed to support
your back dependent on how you sleep. Find out more here.

Conclusion
As a new parent, you should take extra care for your wellbeing. The longer you stay fit and healthy
the more you will be able to play with your children. Being a new parent comes with many extra
strains including lack of sleep and a loss of independence. Take time to check in on yourself and do
things that make you happy.
