We all have spaces in our homes that we don’t want our pets wandering into. It might be your craft room. Maybe it’s the kitchen or dining room. No matter what room you are trying to keep your pet out of, there are ways to accomplish your goals. Here are some of the best ways that you can keep your pets out of those places in your home that are better off without pets.
A pet fence
There are fences that you can buy from your local pet shop. These fences are perfect for anyone who wants to put up a gate to block their pets from getting into certain rooms in their home. These gates and fences are a lot like baby gates that are used to keep toddlers safe from other rooms in the house. If you have a bigger dog, you can get a big gate. But a baby gate works fine for small dogs and puppies.
Install a half door
Adding in sliding pocket doors where you feel your pet should not be will help keep them out. It is also a great alternative to the gates and fences. With the gates and fences, you have to climb over them or unlatch them to get through to the next room. But if you get a sliding half door, you can easily open it up and get through, and shut it back before your pet follows you through.
Adding scents to the room you want your pet out of
There are scents that animals like to avoid. These scents are sometimes harmful, but there are a lot of scents that don’t harm animals but help them to avoid the areas of your home you want them to. People use scents like vinegar to keep dogs from doing their business in certain places in the yard and in their homes. You can find all kinds of repellents in your local pet shop.
Train them
If you have a new puppy, you can easily train them to stay out of certain rooms by giving them a warning to stay out. If you have a bigger dog, you can give them an “Out” command that will tell them that they can no longer be in that room. This is helpful when you don’t necessarily want the pets to stay out of the room forever, but when it is time to go, the pet knows to leave.
Give them a shock
There are non-hurtful, shocking collars that you can get for your pet. If you have a spot in your home that you want your pet to stay out of, set up the boundaries. When your pet crosses over to the next room, they will feel a small shock and they will know that they are not allowed to go into that room. This isn’t the most efficient way of keeping your pet out of certain rooms, but it is a suggestion if you have no other ideas, or if you can’t install doors and fences in your home.
A motion detection spray
When you are in the room and you don’t want your pet to follow, you can add in a motion detection spray. It is a bottle filled with water that will lightly spray your pet when they try to enter a room they are not allowed in. This spray is perfect for dogs who learn by spray bottle, and it isn’t enough water that would cause a mess or make you wet if you passed through without turning the motion detection off. This is a lot safer for the pets than the shock collar, but might be less efficient depending on your dog.
The most important thing to remember when picking a method: you know your dog best.
You can read the list of things here, but only you will know what type of pet you have. You are the only person who knows what your pet responds to and how quickly they can avoid boundaries. Think about your pet and its personality. When you know what works best for them, you can choose an item on the list.
